How to Configure AOL email in Outlook?

AOL accounts use two-factor authentication. To add AOL email to Outlook, you need an app password. This will be different from your regular password. After generating the app password, you can set up AOL email account in Outlook.

Step 1: Generate Third-Party App Password

  1. Sign in to mail.aol.com
  2. Go to your AOL Profile section and select the Account Info option
  3. From the left navbar, click on Account Security and click on Generate App Password
  4. From the App Password popup screen, select the Outlook Desktop and click on the Generate button
  5. Note down or copy the generated app password

Step 2: Set up AOL mail in Outlook 2016, 2019, and Microsoft 365

  1. Open Outlook and go to the File tab
  2. Select Info and click on the Add Account button
  3. Enter your AOL email address and click on the connect button
  4. Enter AOL App Password and click on the connect button
  5. Select IMAP and click on the Done button

Once the verification process is complete, Outlook will download the messages to your account.

Add AOL email to Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2010

  1. Open Outlook and Go to the File Tab
  2. Go to the Info and click on the Add Account button.
  3. Choose Manual setup or additional server type and click on the Next button.
  4. Choose POP or IMAP and click on the Next button.
  5. In User Information, enter your name and email address.
  6. In Server Information, select IMAP as the account type, put imap.aol.com as the Incoming Mail Server, and smtp.aol.com as the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP).
  7. In Logon Information, enter the AOL email address and password and click on the More Settings button.
  8. Go to the Outgoing Servers tab and check the checkbox next to My Outgoing Server (SMTP) require authentication.
  9. Go to the Advanced tab, enter 993 as the incoming server (IMAP) and select SSL in Use the following type of encrypted connection dropdown.
  10. Enter 465 as the Outgoing Server (SMTP) and select SSL in Use the following type of encrypted connection dropdown.
  11. Click on the OK button and click on the Next button.
  12. Once completed, close the popup menu and click on the Finish button.
